From underneath the covered entryway to Konnorsâ apartment building, Martinez brushed off the raindrops from his beige Buck Mason Italian wool town coat and shook his shaved head. The Gilroy lobby was attended, but Barnum had the concierge on their payroll, so with a wink, the man allowed Martinez through to the elevators, where he pressed floor twelve.
When the doors parted, Martinez stepped out into the fresh scent of new renovation, carpet, paint, and whatever else those contractor people did to make places like this pop. Wandering down the hallway in search of apartment number 1225, Martinez could not believe his luck. Across the way, none other than Kristi Konnors herself was standing there, saying goodbye to some old hag.
Without a sound, Martinez strolled up behind Konnors. He pushed away the urge to reach down and, with both hands on her head, snap her scrawny neck. But she must have sensed his presence because before he got within striking distance, she had already taken a step forward into the old womanâs apartment and, in less than a second, turned around and drew her pistol, aimed straight at his chest.
On instinct, he put his hands up, palms facing forward, and smiled in an attempt to disarm the jumpy cop.
âTurn around. Hands behind your head, now!â the little woman barked like some kind of puppy. His desire to smile drained away, replaced with growing frustration, but he complied.
âAinât done nothinâ wrong, little lady, just wanna talk,â he said as she shoved him against the hallway wall, yanked both his wrists behind, and cuffed him.
âYouâre under arrest,â she said, shouldering him forward back toward the elevators.
âMakinâ a mistake, honey. You donât know who the fuck youâre dealinâ with.â
She rattled off the memorized Miranda rights and before long, had him seated in the back of her squad car on the way downtown.
Well that sure didnât go as planned.
